Making the site faster

CheetahIf there’s one thing we don’t like to do here at Buy Our Honeymoon, it’s sit still. We’re always making small changes and improvements to the site, even if it’s just to the systems we use internally to help us with customer or guest enquiries. Sometimes, we add a larger feature you can use when putting together your wedding list or customising your registry pages, other times it’s a minor tweak that doesn’t demand a blog post to announce it.

This week, it’s a bit of both. We’ve made some adjustments to the site that should make viewing your list or managing your items much quicker. If you’ve got many items, you should hopefully notice a big improvement.  Similarly, the List Details tab when you log in to make changes to your registry previously might have loaded slowly if you have a lot of categories. We’ve now identified what was causing this, and the page now loads super-quickly even with dozens of categories.

The faster the site runs, the easier it is to use. We’re always on the lookout for further improvements we can make — for updates on our progress, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter, or join us on Facebook!

Unusual and wonderful registry gifts

Earlier this month, a CNN article on honeymoon registries recommended that couples using a service such as ours should “avoid extensive itemization” — wow did that get us thinking, because we couldn’t disagree more!

We think it’s important to break your gifts down into “guest-sized chunks”. We find that guests engage with detailed, varied registries far more, where your personalities as a couple have a chance to shine through, and where it’s clear that your gifts aren’t measured only by their cost, but by their significance and character.

In fact, sometimes the most quirky, offbeat items are the most popular with guests, even more than gifts for romantic meals, spa treatments or travel and accommodation. So we thought it might be fun to take a look through the many thousands of gifts registered through buy-our-honeymoon.com to find some of the more unusual ones.

And as much as fabulous meals in beautiful restaurants are popular items to add to your honeymoon registry, so are odd foods and adventurous dining. From black eggs cooked by the volcanic springs of Japan to a meal of the Moreton Bay bugs of the South Pacific, our customers have tasted their way through bizarre delicacies the world over. One couple pleaded with their guests not to buy the gift of scorpion kebabs from the night market in Beijing. Of course, someone did.

Various couples honeymooning over the Christmas period have registered for Christmas Dinner — and who could resist being the first to snap up this gift? Later this year, one couple plan to spend part of their honeymoon hiking around the isolated north-western peninsula of Iceland. Their gift list includes dehydrated food supplies: this is a serious trip of a lifetime!

Actually, a surprising number of registies include very real danger. As well as several couples looking forward to diving with sharks, one couple spent a few days driving through Death Valley. Their registry included a permit required to even enter the National Park, as well as accommodation at one of the only places that’ll keep you alive. Perhaps one of the more dramatic items we’ve seen registered, though, was a tattoo created while on honeymoon!

Lots of registries include simple treats to provide for a little luxury on honeymoon: taxi rides, afternoon tea, enrty to the airport VIP lounge. And lots of registries include items that we’d count as super-practical: entry visas, a week of sat-nav, flight stockings to ward off DVT, and anti-mosquito warfare supplies. One couple, fabulously, registered for a variety of components to repair an old camper van.

And since you don’t have to limit your registry to items for your honeymoon — you can mix-and-match honeymoon contributions with more traditional homewares or other gifts — some couples include gifts that help prepare for their wedding itself. We’ve seen an authentic “cut-throat” barber’s shave, tango lessons, and a bagpiper to play the bride down the aisle as surprising, but valued, gifts registered on the site. One couple included a toy for their pet whippet, another a worm bin (with worms) for their garden. A couple marrying next month have registered for enough Super-8 film to capture “relentless portraits” of the bride on their honeymoon. We think that’s a brilliant example of the registry becoming as romantic as the couple!

But perhaps our very favourite unusual gifts come from a couple who spent part of their honeymoon on a volunteer project working at an orphanage in Romania. Guests could donate to the cost of the project itself, or donate clothes, colouring books, stickers and stationery as gifts through the couple’s registry.

What have we missed? Have you included anything unique on your honeymoon gift list that we didn’t notice? Do let us know in the comments below!

Greenwich Magazine

We were delighted to be approached about participating in a piece in the Spring 2011 issue of Greenwich Magazine, a free local magazine distributed to homes throughout Greenwich — where our offices have been located since we launched — together with Blackheath and Docklands in London.

The article discusses local businesses that have focussed on the web, and mentions our efforts to keep ourselves findable on Google, and the challenges of launching internationally. You can view a digital copy of the entire magazine online.

Buy Our Honeymoon appear in Greenwich Magazine, Spring 2011

We’d like to thank Doug Morrison and Adrian Day for the chance to appear in the article — it’s been a thrill to appear for the first time in the local press!

Happy Birthday to buy‑our‑honeymoon.com!

Back at the beginning of April 2007, we flipped the switch and made buy-our-honeymoon.com live to the world.  We couldn’t be more happy to be celebrating our fourth birthday. Cake and goody bags for all!

This last year has seen a massive 20% increase on the number of couples signing up to use our service — from an already-strong 2009 — and we were delighted back in June when the 100,000th gift to be reserved through the site was made.  We’re now well on our way to the 200,000th gift!

Since April 2010, we’ve opened lists for couples in 39 different countries, and helped couples visit 130 different honeymoon destinations around the world.  We’ve also launched our multi-lingual wedding registry service, and worked to streamline our integration with PayPal, so that your Gift History is a comprehensive record of gift payments made into your account.

We’ve been honoured to be Highly Commended for the second year running in the Wedding Ideas Awards, and we’re proud that many of our new customers choose us on the recommendation of their friends and family. It means a lot to us.

We have big plans for the year ahead, not least of which is our return to the National Wedding Show at Earls Court this coming autumn.  We’ve had to miss the show for the past couple of years, so we’re really looking forward to talking again face-to-face with couples about what they’d like to see from a modern, independent wedding list. We’re always working on improving our service, and our fifth year won’t be any different.

Most importantly, though, we’d like to thank all the couples who’ve signed up with us this past four years — for your kind words of feedback, for your brilliant suggestions, and most of all for allowing us to be part of your big day. We know that choosing a supplier for any aspect of your wedding can be daunting, and we really appreciate the faith that each couple invests in us. Thanks so much, all of you.

Use Swedish on your multilingual wedding gift list

Towards the end of last year, we launched a new feature where you can display your honeymoon gift list in more than one language. This is brilliant for couples with international family and friends: your wedding guests can view, reserve and pay for items on your registry wherever they live, and our service supports multiple currencies and offers automatic currency conversion.

With great thanks to our customers who’ve helped us develop additional translations, we’re delighted to announce that we’ve now added Swedish to the range of languages available for you to use on your site.  This brings the number of translations we offer to six:

  • French
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese
  • Italian
  • German
  • Swedish

To use our multilingual wedding list service on your registry pages, just let us know which languages you’d like to use, and we’ll be glad to set it up for you. If you’re using PayPal to collect the value of your gifts, we’ll also make sure your guests have the same language options for their credit card transactions, where those options are available.

This service is completely free, and if you feel your guests would benefit from another language apart from the ones listed above, do please let us know.

Top tips for arranging your wedding seating plan

On Twitter, we noticed that Adam from the awesome TopTablePlanner.com has been posting a set of tips for putting together your wedding table plan, so we asked him if he wouldn’t mind writing a guest blog post for us collecting some of that wisdom together in one place. Adam very kindly agreed, so here’s the first in what we hope to be a series of occasional guest posts offering general advice and ideas for your big day and beyond.

Working out who’s going to sit where can often be one of the most stressful and time consuming parts of planning a wedding. It can be like trying to fit square pegs in round holes sometimes!

Maybe you’ve got a group of nine friends or colleagues but are limited to tables of eight so somehow need to split them up. Or perhaps Aunt Maud doesn’t speak to the rest of the family so you need to find another table to sit her on.

Don’t despair though! Here’s some top tips to help you arrange your wedding seating plan.

Elderly guests

Make sure they’re not sitting near any loud speakers as they may moan about the noise — but at the same time make sure they’re near enough to hear any speeches!

Children

Always sit young children with their parents but think about having a table for older children if you think that might work. Putting some crayons and colouring books on the table is a great way of keeping younger children entertained.

Close Friends/Family

Make sure the tables nearest the top table are reserved for close friends and family.

Groups

Try to keep groups together wherever you can — friends, family, colleagues etc. Place as many obvious groups as you can on the plan first and you’ll find you’ve probably almost completed it already! If you need to split them up make sure everyone knows someone else on the table.

Couples

If at all possible, don’t separate couples even if one of them is a bridesmaid or usher. If you have to, put the leftover partner on a table with people they know.

Singles

Don’t use the seating plan as an opportunity to plan cupid and matchmake single guests. It’ll be really obvious and they probably won’t thank you for it!

Table Numbers

Numbers can imply a hierarchy – you wouldn’t want Aunt Maud grumbling that she’s only on table 8 whereas Aunt Betty is on table 3. Consider using table names instead, perhaps related to your theme or to things that are special to you as a couple.

And finally…

Consider using software such as Toptableplanner to help you arrange your seating plan. You can easily drag and drop your guests and tables around the screen and try different layouts, saving each version so you can see what works best.

The top 5 honeymoon destinations of 2010

We’ve helped couples using our honeymoon registry service to visit around 150 different countries across the globe, taking anything from a few days’ city break to an entire year’s circumnavigation. So we thought it might be interesting to take a look at the most popular destinations for couples using Buy Our Honeymoon in 2010 — where do people go? And what kinds of gift could you include on your wedding list if you’re planning a honeymoon there yourself?

Maldives

The classic honeymoon and the choice of the romantics, the islands of the Maldives provide the ultimate beach paradise.  Couples relax and enjoy the amazing spa treatments, candlelit dinners on the beach and (for those who have the energy) some fantastic watersports. The Maldives is, by far, the most popular individual honeymoon destination for couples using our service.

The USA

Playing the tables in Las Vegas, taking in a Sex and the City tour of New York, riding the cable cars in San Francisco or sipping Mai Tais in Hawaii — four different individual destinations in the USA each appeared in our top 10, and taken together made America the most visited country for our couples in 2010.  And what’s not to love?  The sheer energy and endless diversity provides a thousand different possibilities.

Italy

Honeymooners are drawn to the sheer romance of the eternal city and the stunning beaches of the Amalfi Coast. A gondola ride in Venice or wine tasting in Tuscany make for an amazing wedding gift — but many couples go off the beaten track too. What about travelling the famous Mille Miglia car race route, or exploring the hidden gems of Puglia?

Bali and Thailand

Our couples hoping for an exotic honeymoon are drawn to the far east.  From the bustle of Bangkok to the quiet contemplation of a temple tour, Thailand can be as exciting or as relaxed as you want. Gifts have included visits to the Golden Buddah and the Floating Markets of Bangkok.   Elephant trekking in Koh Samui and speed boat transfers between islands have proven to be hugely popular choices.

Once visited, Bali holds a special place in peoples’ hearts.  From the blissful relaxation of the Hot Springs in Brahma Vihra Arama or the spectacular beauty of diving amongst the coral reefs in Amed, Bali is simply breathtaking.

Australia and New Zealand

Thrill seekers with a sense of adventure head ‘down under’. The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb and scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef are top of the agenda for those seeking a high-energy honeymoon.  And as well as Lord of the Rings fans seeking out film locations, those of you who’d like to enjoy a spot of heli-hiking or white-water rafting, are drawn to New Zealand.

----

Buy Our Honeymoon couples tend to be adventurous — the world is their oyster! — and luckily for those who don’t fancy doing the research we can provide a Helping Hand service that fills up your list with brilliant ideas of things to do.  We don’t forget lounging on the beach with a cocktail or enjoying a sumptuous dinner — because even the most energetic of couples need to relax and enjoy too!

The Wedding Ideas Awards 2011

We’re completely thrilled to announce that Buy Our Honeymoon was one of only five nominees for Best Wedding Gift List in the Wedding Ideas Awards 2011!

This is the second year running that we’ve been shortlisted, and we’re enormously grateful to all our customers from 2010 who were kind enough to support us with their votes.

The award ceremony was on Friday, though regrettably this year we weren’t able to attend — but we nonetheless followed the live reports from our industry colleagues on Twitter to discover the winners as they were announced! This year, the finalists in our category were as follows:

  • Buy Our Honeymoon
  • John Lewis
  • Debehnams
  • House of Fraser
  • Cancer Research

The nominations and winners are taken solely from the thousands of votes cast through the Wedding Ideas Magazine website throughout November — so for us, a small, independent service, to have been ranked alongside the very biggest names in UK retail, is completely incredible.  We’re massively honoured, and very, very grateful.

The award winners were John Lewis — quite rightly! They run the biggest and most popular traditional wedding list service in the UK, and naturally, the vote reflected that. A flurry of debate broke out on Twitter regarding the merits of such well-known brands winning their respective categories, but this only really speaks to the importance of the awards themselves: they’re official! That an alternative service like ours can be nominated at all is just phenomenal, and highlights the diversity and health of the market here in the UK.

We had an awesome 2010, and we’re so grateful to our customers this year for their generous support and encouragement. We very much appreciate your votes and your feedback — and we’ll continue to do our very best in 2011 to further develop and improve our service, and to provide the most romantic wedding gift list ever!

4 recent small improvements

Here at Buy Our Honeymoon, we’re constantly making small adjustments and improvements to our service, to try to provide the best wedding list service we possibly can. Some of these — such as our recent multilingual registry feature — deserve a full blog post all of their own. Others are smaller, incremental improvements and changes, such as the following four new features we’ve recently added:

Following customer requests, you can now use the Turkish Lira or the East Caribbean Dollar as a display currency on your honeymoon registry. This brings the total number of currencies available to 29, with 14 available to collect gifts in your PayPal account. Don’t forget, with Buy Our Honeymoon, you can display up to three currencies at the same time on your registry pages, with our system handling currency conversions automatically.

We’ve made some improvements to the Frequently Asked Questions available to guests, in the light of recent changes to the design of payment pages on PayPal, and to try to help in the rare occasions when a guest encounters problems making a credit card payment into your PayPal account.

We’ve also set up a system to detect if payment of gifts into a couple’s PayPal account is delayed because they haven’t yet confirmed their email address with PayPal. We can then get in touch with you to help guide you through the process of confirming your email and releasing your funds into your account.

Finally, the photos you’ve uploaded to customise your theme and to illustrate the items on your registry are now stored on Amazon’s S3 service, instead of on our own server. This means that your registry pages should load more quickly. For the technically-minded, we moved over 8.5GB of images!

Along with these small changes, there’s one other thing that isn’t changing: our price. In the UK, the VAT (sales tax) rate rises to 20% at the beginning of January — but we’ll simply absorb this, keeping the simple, one-time payment for our service at only £55, inclusive of VAT. This means you can start your free trial in the New Year without worrying about having to beat the VAT rise.
